A little about the Club
Unlike some sports clubs and fitness organisations, membership to our club gives you a sense of belonging. It gives you ownership too because the club is owned by it’s members and managed by a voluntary committee. Members are people we consider to be part of the family – not a membership number passing through now and then.
Clubs like ours are rare, we are not corporately owned or managed and we are not run for profit. All surplus income is re-invested into our facilities for our members enjoyment.
Squash & Racketball are indoor sports played with a racket and a small, hollow rubber ball. At a more advanced level, they are fast-moving sports and at any level they are excellent cardiovascular exercise.
Games are played in a four-walled court by players of almost any age – and both are easy to learn. Forbes Magazine declared squash as “the healthiest sport available” whilst MensHealth Magazine said it burns “more calories per minute than any other sport”
All you need to get started is standard gym wear, indoor non-marking sports shoes, a racket and a ball. Rackets can be borrowed from the club if required.
Our club provides qualified coaching for members and guests of any standard and support for coaches who wish to develop and improve their skills. Full details are available on request.
The club has a number of teams competing in Hertfordshire and Essex leagues. Our 1st team regularly plays in the top division of the Hertfordshire league and has previously won titles in both Hertfordshire and Essex. Team squash provides great camaraderie – and team match evenings always conclude with a meal and drinks with opponents.
Club tournaments for Squash and Racketball are held throughout the year including the Club Handicap Tournament, Open Championships, Balsham Bowl, Challengers Trophy, Doubles Tournaments and Age Group tournaments. These optional and free to enter competitions provide fun and competitive opportunity for players of all ages, standards and gender.
We are very proud of our juniors as the young are our players of the future. We offer young players every opportunity to play Squash and/or Racketball in a safe environment and encourage them to participate at a level they are comfortable with. Our club is proud to have produced some world ranked players from our juniors including Daryl Selby, who consistently ranks within the world’s top 20. Our club coach Nick Mulvey was also a junior who now regularly competes in international tournaments at senior level.
