World Class squash was in plentiful supply at Bishop’s Stortford Squash and Racketball Club between 15th and 20th May when the Silver Leys based club was the host venue for a Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour event. The Vitesse Stortford Classic 2017 offered $10,000 in prize money that attracted top international squash players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, as well as Jamaica, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Czech Republic.
The first qualification round saw Club Captain & event Sponsor Steff Burkwood, current Club Champion Matt Delaney and Herts Division 1 first team player Tim Dixon unfortunately all lose after being given special ‘local’ spots in the tournament. Club Professional and England Squash Coach Nick Mulvey (World Ranking 220) had a ‘wildcard’ entry into the main draw of the tournament but lost to the eventual semi-finalist Richie Fallows 0-3 (WR 58) despite playing well and nearly taking two of the games.
The first semi-final between Greg Lobban (WR 74) and Ben Coleman (WR 55) lasted 83 minutes with Greg taking the win 3-2 (5-11, 5-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9) after coming back from a two game deficit. The second semi-final lasted a jaw dropping 98 minutes and saw George Parker (Qualifier and WR 170) beat rival Richie Fallows (WR 58) 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 11-8). Both matches showed how much fitness and training it takes to play in top events such as these. All players gave everything they had and were exhausted afterwards.
The final was then played the following day in front of a capacity crowd. Greg Lobban, who was competing in only his second full PSA Tour event since recovering from a hamstring injury sustained at the Chicago Open last year, raced to a 2 – 0 lead before his opponent George Parker, showing the form that had brought him through a tough qualifying event, snatched the third game. Greg however, re-established his superiority in the forth to capture the game and the title 3-1 in 50 mins (11-7, 11-3, 8-11, 11-3). After the match, a delighted Greg Tweeted, “The last three weeks have exceeded all my expectations and then some”.
Club Manager Andrew Mulvey said “….It’s taken a lot of planning and hard work to get this event organised but it’s fantastic that Vitesse have sponsored this event for the second year running. The Committee and Club members have thoroughly enjoyed being able to see World Class squash matches on our doorstep. The publicity can only be good for our Club as well as for the game of squash itself…….. Thanks must also be given to my son Nick Mulvey for marking many of the matches and for managing to stream all ‘show court’ matches live over the internet for people to watch online” Replays of matches can still be viewed via the Club’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/stortfordsquash
